The Honorable Dorit Beinisch, President of the Supreme Court of Israel
Defending Human Rights in Times of Terror
April 16, 2009, 8:30 PM, Dodds Auditorium, Woodrow Wilson School
|2010 Bernstein Lecture
A democracy that ignores basic principles of human rights is liable to give terrorism the victory it seeks. The law is not silent before the guns of war. Therefore, it is the Court's duty to exercise judicial review in times of war as in times of peace and maintain human rights as well as our democratic values.
The Honorable Dorit Beinisch, President of the Supreme Court of Israel, will deliver the Fifth Annual Donald S. Bernstein '75 Lecture. It will be held at 8:30 PM in Dodds Auditorium of the Woodrow Wilson School. The title of her talk is "Defending Human Rights in Times of Terror." Join us for what promises to be an enlightening presentation.
The lecture is open to the public. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. Because of security considerations, audience members must arrive early to be screened with handheld metal detectors. All patrons are urged to avoid bringing unnecessary metal items that might activate the detectors. Photo identification will be required for admission, and backpacks and other large items will not be permitted in the auditorium.
Dorit Beinisch was appointed a Justice of the Supreme Court of Israel in December 1995 and in September 2006 was appointed the President of the Supreme Court, becoming the first woman in Israel to hold this distinguished position. In her public service career, President Beinisch has striven for nondiscriminatory law enforcement, led an uncompromising war on corruption, and implemented constitutional human rights and legal norms based on Israeli and international law. She has devoted special attention to rooting out government corruption and to ensuring that government institutions, especially the security forces and the police, adhere to the rule of law and protect human rights. She received her bachelor of laws degree (LL.B.) and a master of laws degree (LL.M.) summa cum laude from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
The Bernstein Lecture, started in 2005 through the generosity of Donald S. Bernstein '75, brings a significant legal scholar to campus each year. Previous Bernstein Lecturers have been Judge Richard Posner (2005), Kenneth Roth (2006), Robert C. Post (2007), and Cass R. Sunstein (2008).
