Sandra Bermann is Professor and Chair of the Department of Comparative Literature at Princeton. She is author of The Sonnet over Time: Studies in the Sonnets of Petrarch, Shakespeare and Baudelaire, translator of Manzoni's On the Historical Novel, and editor, with Michael Wood, of Nation, Language, and the Ethics of Translation. A Fulbright and Whiting Fellow and visitor at the Institute for Advanced Studies and the Columbia University Institute for Scholars in Paris, she was recently elected President of the American Comparative Literature Association. She is now working on a book about the wartime writings of French poet and resistance fighter René Char, and essays on translation, including a paper on legal translation delivered at the 2006 annual meeting of the Association of American Law Schools.
