Scott Leon Washington is a PhD candidate in the Department of Sociology at Princeton University with an affiliation at the Office of Population Research. He has a wide variety of interests (ranging from social, political, and legal theory to historical demography), but his primary areas of research include: classification, stratification, law, culture, violence, politics, comparative methods, and race and ethnicity. A former Graduate Fellow at the University Center for Human Values and the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, he is presently completing a dissertation on the crystallization of the one-drop rule in the United States between 1880 and 1940. Before arriving at Princeton, Mr. Washington attended the University of California, Berkeley, where, in addition to studying Philosophy, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa and as a class valedictorian in Sociology. He was recently named a Graduate Fellow of the American Academy of Political and Social Science. In 2006, he won the Best Graduate Student Paper Prize from the Law and Society Association for his paper, "The Killing Fields Revisited: Lynching and Anti-Miscegenation Legislation in the Jim Crow South, 1882-1930."
